Albeit fetishized by hipsters, the plaid shirt is an everyman classic. Let’s hop on Chris’s bike to take us On the Road and back to the Beat Generation when Kerouac and Cassady uniformed themselves in tartan button-downs, not as style choices, but as a response to the working class of American suburbanism. More than that, Brando (who plays a brick-walled blue-collar named Terry) in On the Waterfront is also seen in plaid, and while Chris’s flannel shirt is different from Brando’s jacket, it surely could’ve been a contender.
